The Self Empowerment Center

licensed clinical psychologist

Yasmeen Khan, Psy.D.

I am a licensed clinical psychologist in professional practice for over 15 years. I hold a Psy.D in Clinical Psychology from Chicago School Of Professional Psychology.I am trained in Clinical Hypnosis by the American Society of Clinical Hypnosis (ASCH). I also have certification in the Internal Family Systems Model from The Self Leadership Institute. I specialized in cross-cultural psychology. I have worked in varied settings; community mental health centers, child guidance clinics, residential treatment centers for youth, and international research projects. I also supervised the Child and Adolescent Program at an outpatient community mental health center.

I offer complete diagnostic and treatment services for a wide variety of emotional problems and physical symptoms with emotional underpinnings. I work extensively with a variety of life problems including, but not limited to: anxiety, stress-related pain and illness, depression, phobias, eating disorders, panic disorders, post-traumatic stress and other dissociative disorders. I also help with smoking cessation, weight loss, and adjustment to life transitions.

In psychotherapy, I utilize a variety of treatment modalities including guided imagery, internal family systems, play therapy, cognitive therapy, rational-emotive-behavior therapy, clinical hypnosis, group therapy, sculpting, art therapy, and other experiential modalities. With experience in marital therapy, I teach communication skills for the enhancement of interpersonal relationships.

I do not offer band-aid solutions. My approach towards psychotherapy is strength based rather than pathology based. I believe in clients’ strengths and intuitive wisdom. People know the solution to their problems and my job is to help them discover those answers. I take a collaborative approach as I believe clients are the experts on themselves.

Symptoms are ways of coping. These coping styles need to be understood, explored, and reintegrated into the personality so that we can get to the root of the problem. If you only treat the symptom at the superficial level, it will resurface like a weed.

Research has shown that therapeutic relationship is the single most important ingredient in determining therapy success. I try to connect with my clients at their level. I try to understand them in the context of their worldview and unique life experiences.

I see myself as bi-cultural; which offers me a broad perspective on life; both personally and professionally. This allows me to view issues from varied perspectives and offer a flexible treatment approach.

I try to provide a comfortable and safe healing space for my clients. This makes my profession sacred for me and I cannot imagine doing anything else professionally.
